How to be a ‘Soundwriter’: Sound as a storytelling device

One of the most underused tools by podcasters is their most powerful: sound. It can transport listeners to any place, at any time. It can convey emotion stronger than any other medium. It can engage a listener so deeply that it can change their lives. But it isn’t as simple as just turning on a microphone and recording. Pedro Mendes has been a radio broadcaster and podcaster for over 20 years and he learned these lessons little by little over that time, picking up skills, tricks and habits along the way. It’s all added up to his approach to podcasting: be “sound first.”

Key Takeaways

  • Why you should tell stories via podcasting that are based in sound
